The profession of acting is highly discriminating when it comes to language competence. For actors, language ability is far more than merely "knowing how to say lines"; it frequently constitutes a decisive factor in the stratification of performance, the plausibility of a character, and ultimately, the trajectory of a professional career. An actor deficient in vocal characterization and incapable of conveying subtext will be unable to secure the audience's belief, even if blessed with exceptional physical appearance. Hence, preeminent actors are invariably adept and sophisticated users of language. A significant number of actors must engage in sustained and systematic language training to rectify their oral pronunciation. For actors required to perform roles in a foreign language, receiving such training to eliminate accent-related obstacles is an indispensable component of their professional practice.

It should be recognized that there indeed exist a minority of actors whose linguistic capabilities are not exceptional, yet who have still attained success. In such cases, their shortcomings in language are generally offset by other remarkable and distinctive advantages. To illustrate, the unique Austrian accent of the Hollywood actor Arnold Schwarzenegger served to strengthen his screen persona as a hard man, whereas the Chinese comedian Stephen Chow, by employing his distinctly characteristic gestures and facial expressions, replaced certain aspects of verbal communication.

也得承认,确实有一小部分演员语言能力并不突出,但依然获得了成功。这种情况下,他们的语言短板通常会被其他非常突出且独特的优势所弥补。举个例子,好莱坞影星施瓦辛格独特的奥地利口音,反而强化了他银幕上的硬汉形象;而中国喜剧演员周星驰,则是用他极具特色的肢体动作和表情,替代了部分语言功能。

Indeed, language lessons and pronunciation training constitute core compulsory components of the curriculum at all legitimate dramatic arts institutions. These courses, known within the profession as "speech training," are not conventional academic classes but are instead principal disciplinary subjects, holding equal standing with acting and physical movement. The celebrated Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in the United Kingdom, for example, offers its acting students core courses including Voice, Phonetics and Pronunciation, and Spoken English for Actors. Furthermore, it offers English pronunciation remediation courses for non-native English speakers, assisting them in acquiring standard British pronunciation and understanding the distinctions between British and American accents.

事实上,语言课和发音训练是所有正规戏剧表演院校的核心必修课。这类课程在行业内通常被称为“台词课”,它不是普通的文化课,而是和表演、形体并列的专业主课。例如,英国著名的皇家戏剧艺术学院(RADA)就给表演专业的学生开设了语音与发声、正音学、演员英语口语等核心课程。同时,学校还为英语非母语的学生开设了英语纠音课,帮助他们掌握标准英式发音,并理解英式英语和美式英语的发音区别。

Linguistic and pronunication ability constitutes, for the actor, the foundational element in establishing a character's verisimilitude, as well as a key instrument for surmounting cultural divides and expanding professional boundaries. This ability goes considerably beyond the mere lucid delivery of dialogue; instead, through the precise manipulation of phonetics, intonation, rhythm, and vocal timbre, the actor communicates to the audience the character's regional background, social class, emotional condition, and even the hidden depths of their inner being. The extent of an actor's mastery over language directly determines the reach of their artistic life's horizons—for this not only governs their capacity to portray convincing characters but also directly affects their room for manoeuvre on the international stage and the zenith of their professional achievement.
